His mindset exemplifies a desire for continuous improvement. He cares about his patients and so he is focused on improving outcomes for them. He is open to the perspective of someone he respects. He is courageous, willing to be vulnerable and work through the discomfort of criticism. He is committed to putting in the work to improve.

I spotlight this talk on my online course on Coursera on networking because to grow as a leader you need someone who can see you and in you things you can’t see for yourself. Coaches can help you show up for impactfully and more authentically. We have a lot of team coaching conversations in my resident course at University of Michigan too. https://www.coursera.org/learn/how-to-network

If someone among my family, friends or colleagues offers advice because they think I could improve, however well-meaning this might be intended, I might feel criticized or even talked down to. If I myself approach a coach or mentor, asking for help or even advice and agree to pay or have my company pay for it, I am much more open to their input and can thus better take advantage of their observations, questions and even suggestions.

The accuracy of that! You’re never done learning, as the subject keeps evolving. It is one powerful quality of the greatest. They cross years and seasons almost seamlessly. Because they accept you’ll never stop learning! And they know that their full potential is ahead, when other think they’re done. They’re the best by their humbleness and at the same time their confidence that they still can improve. And be even better that they already are. They’re aware that performance has cycles. The day you think you’re done, you actually acknowledge your limits. Your incapacity to evolve, to adapt. You become a present past person. And chances are you’ll have tough times dealing with the evolving present and almost there future. I’ll never stop learning. I’ll never be done. And I’m glad to sometimes say “I don’t know”. Because it’s a get better opportunity. The best or nothing.
