This Week in #BusinessHistory: Great business ideas often come from strange places. An idea that revolutionized international commerce was born by the docks in Hoboken, N.J., as a truck driver waited for cotton bales to be loaded on a freighter. That truck driver was Malcom McLean, and after he learned it would take nine hours for the trucks in front of his to have their cargo unloaded, he had an idea: What if the shipping company could just take the trailers off the trucks and load them onto the ship? Over time, McLean developed that idea into what we now know as containerized shipping. In 1955 — 18 years after his trip to Hoboken — McLean purchased two oil tankers, secured a loan to buy $42 million worth of equipment and refitted the tankers to hold stacks of trailers. And 65 years ago this week — April 26, 1956 — McLean’s first container ship, the Ideal X, left Port Newark, N.J. for Houston, carrying 58 containers. How much did shipping change? Before the Ideal X launched, it took a week to load a cargo ship and cost $6 per ton. Containerized shipping cut that down to 8 hours and 16 cents per ton. (For two good videos on McLean’s innovation, see the links in the comments below.) #innovation #shippingcontainers #shippingindustry
