The NetHope Team has spent the last few days in San Francisco at the RSA Conference speaking about the importance of cybersecurity for nonprofits around the world. The week concluded with NetHope CEO, Lance Pierce joining the US Government’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) panel focusing on the unique challenges faced by high-risk communities like international civil society and local governments featuring Emily Skahill, Cyber Operations Planner, CISA; Trevor Parks, Cyber Operations Planner, CISA; and Leah McGrath, Executive Director, StateRAMP. We are proud to have helped contribute to and shape CISA’s work in this space. Here's what Lance has to say about the week: NetHope has been working on cybersecurity and digital protection for over two decades with our international nonprofit Member organizations. Once upon a time those who might launch a cyberattack against an international NGO were not the same threat actors who would launch an attack on domestic institutions and local governments—but no more. We have spent the week at the annual RSA Conference in San Francisco where over 40,000 people from around the world gathered to discuss the latest threats, trends, technologies, and emerging collaborations to help companies, governments and civil society overcome cybersecurity risk. The buzz in the hallways has been strong. One message has been ringing loud and clear from the RSA stage and it is a message you will hear from the NetHope stage as well, and that is about the need for collective action to address the growing problem of ransomware, data theft, and infiltration of networks, which in the case of the international humanitarian sector can lead to novel forms of attack or failure of critical, lifesaving services. We’ve been meeting with corporate partners providing vital resources and content for the NetHope Digital Protection Program and our Global Humanitarian ISAC: committed companies like Okta, Cisco, and SANS Institute. We’ve also connected with indispensable partners like the Center for Internet Security, whose international standards are increasingly being adopted by the global NGO community. Join us at NetHope as we work to secure some of the world’s leading nonprofit organizations through the collective impact of our Digital Protection work, helping them to continue providing care and saving lives. NetHope’s Digital Protection Grant Program made possible through the Digital Breakthrough Initiative, finances underinvested areas of our Members’ cybersecurity, privacy, and data ethics work with high potential for impact across the NetHope network. In 2023, three NetHope Members were awarded grants — Trócaire, Oxfam International, and SOS Children's Villages International. These grants provided critical funding to enhance their digital protection capabilities. Here’s what SOS Children’s Villages and Trócaire had to say about the impact of the grant: “The grant had a highly positive impact on our organization, allowing us to promote cybersecurity in the NGO environment in West Africa, strengthen our commitment to data protection, and foster collaboration with authorities and other stakeholders involved in this critical domain. We are grateful for NetHope's support in making this possible.” - Maman Sani CHEFFOU, IT Manager, SOS Villages d’Enfants au Niger “Previously, our understanding of the impact of the legislation and its implications was quite ad hoc. For example, in some locations, there was a requirement to register with local authorities as a data controller. With the grant, we now possess the necessary information to provide assurances, plan, and develop roadmaps based on a clearer understanding of current and future data protection requirements for all the countries we are involved in. The reports generated from this research will not only benefit Trócaire but will also be advantageous to other NetHope Members.” - Megan Stirling, Data Protection Officer, Trócaire Read more about this important initiative in this grantee spotlight. This week, NetHope CEO Lance Pierce led an insightful "Tech for Good: Vehicle for Transformation" panel at the PQMD Global Health Policy Forum. The discussion delved into how technology advancements could shape our journey towards providing quality healthcare for all. The panel included insightful talks from Jenna Eun, Hannah Cooper Klein, and Dr. Egbe Osifo-Dawodu. NetHope launched its 2024-2030 strategy with a focus on bridging the new Digital Divides. A generation ago, the Digital Divide described the gap in access first to computers and then to the internet and essential technologies. Today, organizations face new digital challenges that threaten the advancement of international NGO missions, as they grapple with the widening gap between available resources and growing needs. These new challenges—what NetHope calls the new Digital Divides—represent critical gaps in infrastructure, systems, capabilities, and knowledge. Over the next decade, we will lead collective action to bridge the New Digital Divides—skills and leadership, inclusion, protection, transformation and innovation, and climate adaptation and resilience—leveraging our powerful, proven model to advance the global good. Learn more about our new strategy here: https://lnkd.in/dHqdDTiY #NetHope #PQMD #TechForGood #HealthcareInnovation #PQMDForum #DigitalDivides
