Recently sold at the St. Louis Car Museum is a highly well documented, 3-owner, 1968 Triumph TR250 that is beautifully kept and serviced. A fantastic classic sports car finished in factory correct Signal Red over new Biscuit Tan interior (originally Black) with Black folding convertible soft top. The final year of this particular TR body design would come as the TR250 for North American buyers with a 2498cc Inline 6 cylinder engine, twin Stromberg carburetion, and servo-assisted disc brakes. Only 8,484 TR250's would come to US soil, and today represent a unique opportunity to have one of Triumphs finest sports car designs!
Under the bonnet of this available 60s Triumph lies its original 2.5L Inline 6 cylinder producing a factory rated 104hp and 143 lb. ft. of torque, mated to a fully synchromesh 4-speed transmission and 3.70:1 rear axle ratio. Other features include rack and pinion steering, power disc brakes, 15” Panasport alloy wheels, Vredstein Sprint Classic 185HR15 radial tires, teak wood dash, leather shift knob, Moto-Lita leather wrapped steering wheel, both carpeted and rubber floor mats, Smiths instrumentation, Triumph AM radio, and passenger visor vanity mirror.
This wonderfully solid example sold new from Larry Reed Sports Cars Inc based in Torrance, California on May 7th, 1969 to its original female owner. She would bring back her new Triumph for her first complimentary 1000-Mile service just 16 days later with 975 miles already clocked on the odometer, indicating she likely purchased this TR250 as dealer demo still around well into the new model year. Service records included with this Triumph are outstanding, with nearly every single service coupon in the maintenance booklet stamped through 1980 when the car had reached 78,000 miles on the odometer! These are all matched with the actual paper records dated back to May 1969! The original owner would enjoy this treasured TR250 until 2006, when she would pass the car along to her brother-in-law, a geologist in Durango, Colorado. He would take on the partial restoration and go through the car mechanically, afterward he would enjoy cruising in this beauty sparingly during the summer months until 2018.
This second owner would contribute new door and trunk weather stripping, side glass window rubber and felts, as well as, a new convertible top with seals. In addition, he replaced the original interior with new tan seating upholstery, door panels and carpet to match. The seats received fresh foams with diaphragms and dash pad, along with, teak wood fascia all replaced for new. This was all done between December 2006-January 2008. During this time, he rebuilt the engine and resealed it with fresh gaskets. The transmission had already been rebuilt at 91,648 miles with a new clutch kit while still out in California. The Triumph would sell to its most recent owner, a dentist located in Washington D.C., in September 2018 completing a long quest of ownership covering the entire United States! This next owner passionately elected to perform a full mechanical overhaul of all systems.
With the help of British Classic Restoration & Service is Kensington, MD, this TR250 example received a radiator flush, new coolant hoses, a rear shock conversion, rebuilt front suspension with new inner tie rods, rebuilt both carburetors, front engine seal, rear transmission seal, pinion seal, differential seal, all new fluids including engine oil/filter, oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, upgrade to Pertronix ignition with new coil, 3-point seatbelts installed, adjusted and bled the brakes. Later that next month, a new starter installed, and it was enjoyed only briefly while the weather allowed.
In the spring of 2019, with 20,751 miles showing on the odometer, London Auto Services, LTD. would commence the balance of work to include replacement of the clutch master cylinder and clutch slave with new pushrod and fluid, new spark plugs, and install a front pulley seal, new timing chain and tensioner, timing cover gasket, damper pulley, rack bushings, and motor mounts. The front upper ball joints and A-arm bushings were replaced, while the rear received new hub bearing, new axles, u-joints; polyurethane spring seats, trailing arm bushings, and differential mounts. For the hot summers, a thermostatically controlled electric cooling fan was added with an auxiliary override switch. A new Bell stainless steel exhaust system was installed, LED headlights and taillights, new electric fuel pump and filter, along with Panasport wheels installed by June 2019! A remarkable cruiser today, it was readily enjoyed during the driving season these last two years, adding some 6,400 additional miles to the odometer. Today, it reads 27,139 which would reflect 127,139 chassis miles since new.
This Triumph TR250 will sold with the original sales documentation, all available service records from all owners, owner's manual, maintenance manual, workshop and service manuals, two tonneau covers, two boot covers (one black & one tan), rubber trunk mat and carpet pad, original spare tire, factory Rostyle wheel covers, custom console armrest wired with two 12-volt auxiliary ports, seatbelt shoulder pads, original sales ads, Heritage Trust Certificate, many spare parts, a Cover King Silver Guard Plus car cover, and three sets of keys! It is remarkably solid and rust free, with one older repaint beginning to show its age in select areas, but does not overshadow the outstanding drive qualities that are simply hard to beat.
