#1 Boats and Barbecues
Floating down the Aare river on an inflatable boat is a favourite summer hobby for many people living here. The moment temperatures begin to rise, locals haul their colorful, inflatable boats out of basements, pack a picnic and head for the river – cruising down the Aare from Thun to Bern with family and friends. Not exactly swashbuckling river rafting, no! But meandering gently down the River on a comfy rubber dinghy, passing lavish green meadows and small islands is as pleasant, relaxing and typically “bernese” as it gets. And if you choose to launch your boat in Uttigen, you get an extra little kick out of overcoming the only somewhat challenging section on this trip. Then, once the “hard” floating work is done, come ashore on the gravel beach near the Campsite Eichholz, where boat captains and their crew mingle with sun seekers, swimmers and grill masters. The wonderful smell of sausages sizzling on a fire is in the air, while people strum guitars, balance on slacklines or have a go at beach volleyball. It doesn’t get better than that! Our ultimate Aare Rafting Guide tells you where to rent inflatable boats, what you need to keep in mind to be safe and most of all, how to find the most beautiful spots.
