Lecture Series Returns for 20th Season
February marks the in-person return of the Brockville Museum’s Annual Winter Lecture Series. The popular series has been running for 20 years, bringing speakers on unique cultural topics to a Brockville audience. New for 2023, lectures will take place in the Brockville Arts Centre theatre, providing a larger venue for the series that has now outgrown its space at the museum itself.
This year’s speaker lineup features a varied slate of academics from Ottawa and Kingston, covering topics on Canadian history from 1812 to the present.
Kicking off the series on February 7th is well-known journalist, former CBC radio and news host, and Associate Professor at Carleton University, Adrian Harewood, speaking on the historical significance of Black Canadian newspapers and the critical roles they’ve played in the construction of Black communities.
On February 14th, Murney Tower Museum Curator and Manager, Simge Erdogan-O’Connor, will detail the unique history and architecture of the iconic nineteenth-century military fortification, National History Site, and now museum in Kingston. Erdogan-O’Connor is an international museum professional and scholar who specializes in the history of Western museums, contemporary museum practice, and cultural diplomacy; she is currently a Ph.D. Candidate at Queen’s University.
On February 21st, historian and professor at Carleton University, Anne Trepanier, will share illustrative and print representations of Confederation drawn from serious and satirical newspapers of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Canada East, and Canada West before their entry into Confederation in 1867, showcasing how the imagination of Confederation was the result of the tension between the perils of assimilation and that of belonging.
To close out the series, Jake Breadman, Ph.D. student at Queen’s University, will shed an environmental light on the War of 1812, particularly in the Niagara Peninsula, to reveal the interconnections between the conflict, its many participants, and the environment, in his presentation on February 28th.
The lectures will take place in-person at the Brockville Arts Centre Tuesdays 10am-12pm in February. Due to popular demand, all ticket holders will also have virtual access to lecture recordings at the close of the series.
Tickets for the series of four lectures (including access to recordings) are $40 and individual lectures can be purchased at $15 each (plus applicable fees).
A special early bird pricing of $35 for the series is available until January 31st, 2023.
